The stench was a constant assault on Cailan’s nostrils. Sure, it had smelled rather repugnant when Murk had led them to the brothel initially, but the alleys were where the local residents really dumped all of their refuse. It was like wading through a river of the foulest things known to man, and it took all his will to keep his eyes forward and not pass out.

The rough brick paths wound and intersected so many times that soon, he feared he was lost. Byrra had given him a general direction, but that didn’t seem to matter anymore. There was no trail for him to follow. Even a bloodhound couldn’t have followed a trail in this place.

Just when he started to lose hope, he heard hushed voices down the way. Filled with a renewed sense of determination, he crouched low and padded forward, hoping to make no sound as he came upon the speakers.

He hoped that it was the abductors and not just some urchins. The voices were moving. As he approached, the sound of several pairs of footsteps met his ears.

Soon enough, he was able to catch their words. He was able to make out who the first speaker was: Murk.

“Would you please just stop and listen to me,” he insisted, the anger and annoyance leaving a hard edge to his voice.

“We have no need to discuss this,” answered another man with a low, gruff voice. “What’s done is done. Your contract has been fulfilled.”

Cailan gritted his teeth, his knuckles popping as he clenched his fists. Had Murk betrayed them, as he feared? As Aideen had feared. It wouldn’t have been that much of a reach. Sure, he and Cass had a past history with Murk, but it hadn’t mattered when they first reunited. He’d tried to capture all of them to turn over to the Sentinels for the very bountiful reward.

Why should he have thought any differently that he might change? That debt he had, the people hunting him, it hadn’t gone away just because Murk knew Zehra’s story and wanted to help her. His problems hadn’t gone away. Cailan supposed he had hoped that nearly dying with them on more than a few occasions would have awakened the kindred spirit…

Just when Cailan was about to give up on his friend and any hope that he might be able to move past this latest incriminating incident, the truth was revealed.

“I don’t want it to be fulfilled,” Murk growled. “I came here to get help from the boss, not to turn them in. They’re not bad people, and I won’t give them up.”

“Well, it doesn’t matter what you want anymore, Murk, nor does it matter if they’re bad people or good. You can be friends with the bounties all you want, but at the end of the day, they have a heavy price on their heads, and we intend to collect. Maybe you should have thought of that before you brought them here.”

Murk cursed and then said some things that Cailan couldn’t discern as they got farther away.
